Twitter suspends blue check mark verifications

Twitter verification is temporarily on hold

Twitter has put a temporary hold on its blue tick verification process, following backlash for verifying the handle of Jason Kessler, who organised a white nationalist rally which sparked violence in Charlottesville, USA.

Kessler tweeted that the victim, Heather Heyer, "was a fat, disgusting Communist", adding, "Communists have killed 94 million". Richard Spencer, who argued in an interview with a British journalist this week that the trans-Atlantic slave trade was good for Africans, is verified.

The decision sparked fury from many who said that, by verifying Kessler, the platform was legitimizing his views and giving him a platform.

Three Chinese students injured in French vehicle attack
At least three people were injured after a auto rammed into passers-by in Blagnac commune near Toulouse, southwest France. The police said that the 28-year-old driver deliberately drove through the group, but he was not on the terror watch-list.

In what appeared to be a response to that overflowing of anger, Twitter said it "paused all general verifications".

It started off as a way for people to differentiate between real accounts and hoax accounts; it was simply identity verification. (I'm not verified, but I recently applied to be.) When accounts are verified, they float to the top of the platform's search results for "top tweets".

Twitter has more than doubled its character allowance for display names.

Facebook seeks nude pics from users to tackle 'revenge porn'
Facebook is testing a new system to combat users posting intimate photos of their former significant others for revenge. It was even the topic of a Netflix documentary titled, " Revenge Porn ".

Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey responded to the tidal wave of complaints a few days later, saying the verification policy was correctly followed in this circumstance but that it's a system that's long required an upgrade.

He also put a question to users about how best the verification process could be altered in the future. If you're an individual requesting verification-rather than a company-you'll need to provide a copy of your passport or driver's license for Twitter to check your identity. He also says that when alt-right people call one another Nazis it's like when "black people were called the n-word for so long they just started calling each other that as a term of endearment". Twitter seems to be sitting up and taking notice.
